Nahr-al-Alwaan
Alex Poelman composed Nahr-al-Alwaan in cooperation with Sabri Dereli, a young Turkish-Dutch composer.
The composition (translated: the river of colours) describes the course of a river. Raindrops and snowflakes give birth to the river in the mountains. Several small brooks flow into the river which follows its course through Eastern and Western countries.
The blend of Eastern and Western music lives above all in the writing itself: it is the rhythms and melodic lines that are characteristically Eastern or Western. Eastern instruments such as the darbuka and the kanun can be added to the usual symphonic band to deepen this colour, so the piece can be performed either with or without them.
