Eanske
Eanske was written for the 700th anniversary of the city of Enschede, to be performed by all twelve bands that reside in and around the city.
Each band has a different level and instrumentation — marching bands, a fanfare band and wind bands of varying grades. Every version is playable as a stand-alone piece, yet the versions are also compatible so they can be performed together.
Movements
- IDe oorsprong (The origin) The first movement tells of the history and origins of Enschede, with the textile industry as the heart of the city. It opens with a fanfare and then introduces the Enschede theme. The rhythm section symbolises the textile machinery.
- IIIn voor- en tegenspoed (For better or worse) The second movement portrays the festivities in the centre of Enschede. But the celebrations give way to a dark day in the city’s history: the fireworks disaster of 13 May 2000, which claimed 23 lives and left some 900 wounded. The Enschede theme returns, now as a choral funeral march.
- IIIDe toekomst (The future) The third movement describes the future of Enschede. As a city close to its German neighbours, there is a strong sense of collaboration. The German national anthem and the anthem of Twente are woven together to depict this bond.
