Nahr-al-Alwaan

Alex Poelman composed Nahr-al-Alwaan in cooperation with Sabri Dereli, a young Turkish / Dutch composer. The composition (translated: the river of colors) describes the course of a river. Raindrops and snow flakes give birth to the river in the mountains. Several small brooks flow into the river which follows its course through Eastern and Western countries. The mix of Eastern and Western music is expressed by the choice of the instrumentation. Besides the usual symphonic band instrumentation, several oriental musical instruments such as the darbuka and the kanun also play an important role. The piece has been performed several times with and without these oriental instruments.
