1944 tells the story of the famous operation Market Garden. Allied troops try to liberate the Netherlands via air and land. But their attempt is stopped by the German oppressors at Arnhem and the Rhine. Many casualties forces the allies to retreat. The war goes on and at the end of 1944 the Dutch famine takes place. In this composition actual recordings of broadcasts during the war are used to emphasize the feelings of the cold and hard times of the war in the Netherlands. The score was commissioned by the Dutch Regimentsfanafare 'Garde Grenadiers & Jagers'.
